The institute provides applied research and technical assistance to government and development organizations and serves as a public service learning laboratory for Ohio University students.

Jackson County leaders hope to create 10,000 jobs

Jackson County leaders and business owners have come together on their own dollar to support economic growth and to fight against the economic downturn and have called on the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs for assistance.The leaders are setting sights high, looking past typical time and geographical boundaries with a goal of creating 10,000 regional jobs over the next 10 years.

“The private sector leaders who initiated the 10 in 10 process know that growing, sustaining, and recruiting businesses and good jobs will take a lot of hard work at the local level, and that often you must overcome turf issues in order to move forward,” said Voinovich staff member Marsha Lewis.

Abandoned Mine Land (AML) spending creates jobs, revenues

The Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs recently completed an analysis of the effects of the Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program spending on Ohio’s economy.The Ohio Department of Natural Resources called upon the School to analyze the current AML data to help determine how the program helps Ohio’s economy through the support and creation of jobs and tax revenues.

The AML project is a joint Federal and State program administered by the ODNR Division of Mineral Resources Management in an attempt to reclaim lands and waters that were adversely affected by abandoned coal mines that were in operation before a federal reclamation law was enacted in 1977.According to the ODNR, Ohio alone houses over 1300 miles of streams that were polluted by acid mine drainage, 119,000 acres of land in need for major reclamations efforts, and polluted domestic water supplies due to abandoned coal mines.

Voinovich School Aids in Feasiblity of Free Clinic

The Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs’ Data Analysis Survey and Health team (DASH) has been working with the Community Health Council of Washington County to create a plan for a free health clinic that would be available to the more than 8000 residents without insurance.Now that feasibility has been established, the group is working to flesh out the details.

HIV in Jails - How is it Managed?
The Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs’ Data, Survey and Health Analysis group (DASH) has been traveling to city and county jails across Ohio conducting face-to-face interviews and distributing pen and paper surveys in order to learn how jails identify and care for inmates with HIV/AIDS. The group hopes the data they collect will help improve the care provided to jail inmates with HIV/AIDS by recognizing the best ways jails are caring for inmates with HIV/AIDS, so that jails can benefit from the experiences of their peer institutions, and by identifying the types of assistance that would be most helpful to jails as they continue to improve the level of HIV care they prov
